This is the remarkable story of Rahul Dravid´s extraordinary cricketing career that commenced in 1996. The book highlights the physical, mental and, of course, technical attributes that have elevated Rahul to legendary status. In this honest endeavour to recount the story of Rahul Dravid, the author is assisted by reminiscences from his mentors, seniors, teammates and even opponents, all of whom witnessed the making of a cricketing legend from close quarters. Devendra Prabhudesai (b. 1976) is a cricket writer based in Mumbai. He is presently Manager - Media Relations and Corporate Affairs at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This is his third book. He has earlier penned Rahul Dravid´s biography, The Nice Guy Who Finished First (2005), and Cricket World Cup: Around the World in Seventy-and-a-Half Days (2007). 1. The Indian subcontinent has been a land of immigrants for thousands of years: waves of migration from Persia, Central Asia, Mongolia, the Middle East and Greece have helped create India´s exceptionally diverse cultural mix. In the centuries before the British Raj, when the Mughals were the preeminent power in the subcontinent, a wide array of migrants known as ´firangis´ made India their home. In this book, Jonathan Gil Harris, a 21st-century firangi, tells their stories. These gripping accounts are of healers, soldiers, artists, ascetics, thieves, pirates and courtesans who were not powerful or privileged. Often they were escaping poverty or religious persecution; many were brought here as slaves; others simply followed their spirit of adventure. Some of these migrants were absorbed into the military. Others fell in with religious communities - the Catholics of Rachol, the underground Jews of Goa, the fakirs of Ajmer, the Sufis of Delhi. Healers from Portugal and Italy adapted their medical practice in accordance with local traditions. Gifted artisans from Europe joined Akbar´s and Jahangir´s royal ateliers and helped create enduring works of art. And though almost invisible within the archival record, some migrant women, such as the Armenian Bibi Juliana and the Portuguese Juliana Dias da Costa, found a home in royal Mughal harems. Jonathan Gil Harris uses his own experience of becoming Indian through the process of acclimatizing to the country´s culture, customs, weather, food, clothes and customs to bring the stories of these shadowy figures to vivid life. 1. 1. Sprache: Deutsch. Erzähler: Nicole Engeln, Thomas Friebe. Louis Philippe (1773-1850) is France´s first ´´constitutional monarch´´, having being properly elected by the National Assembly. He lived through the French Revolution, during which he saw his brother and sister-in-law, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, guillotined by extreme revolutionaries. Then, Napoleon Bonaparte seized the throne, declared himself emperor, and began the conquest of Europe; after Napoleon´s defeat at Waterloo, France welcomed Louis Philippe back as an elected King. His reign was based on the principle of union of king and people, and marked the first real shift away from the ´´divine right to rule´´ approach to kingship; as such, Louis Philippe is the best embodiment of the passage from the Ancien Regime to the truly modern world. This collection of audiobooks will help you understand a crucial part of the history of French monarchy. For each King, you will find a detailed description of the style of his reign and his political achievements, narrated in a lively way. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Katie Haigh. Wagner´s Ring Motifs is aimed in the first instance at listeners new to the Ring and is intended to convey the fascination of Wagner´s music in a clear and simple manner and to decode the musical and dramatic language of the mythical world of the cycle. But even listeners already familiar with the work will find that this database provides them with a crash course in what Thomas Mann described as the ´´allusive magic´´ of the Ring´s leitmotifs. The authors are Sven Friedrich, curator of the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth, and Gerhard K. Englert, the editor of the previous audio guides that have been released in the same series and that explore the world of classical music. Together, the authors offer listeners a modern, convenient and quick introduction to Wagner´s cycle, The Ring of the Nibelung. The motifs are presented in the order of their first appearance in the cycle and accompanied by an expert commentary. In this way, the listener is also introduced to the story of the Ring, an introduction that follows the narrative very closely by examining the development and meaning of the music. The narrator is the distinguished British bass-baritone Sir John Tomlinson, who has appeared in countless performances at the Bayreuth Festival since making his début there as Wotan in 1988. 1.
